Department of Reasonable Expectations

"Your expectations have been reviewed. An adjustment has been issued."

The Department reviews submitted expectations and issues formal Determinations of Reasonableness. Most expectations are found to be unreasonable and are adjusted downward. The adjusted expectations are issued as a formal document with case number, determination, and the Department's official assessment of what "going right" actually looks like.

This is not a pessimism service. The Department does not tell you things will go wrong. The Department tells you what "going right" actually means โ€” which is usually less impressive than you assumed.

The Reasonableness Scale

1 โ€” Demonstrably Reasonable The expectation is consistent with documented outcomes in similar situations. Rare.
2 โ€” Generally Reasonable The expectation is plausible. Adjustment is minor.
3 โ€” Optimistic The expectation is possible but unlikely. Adjustment is moderate.
4 โ€” Unreasonable The expectation significantly exceeds likely outcomes. Standard adjustment issued.
5 โ€” Aspirational The expectation is not connected to any documented reality. Significant adjustment required.

Approximately 78% of submitted expectations receive a rating of 4 or 5. This is not a finding about the people who submit expectations. It is a finding about expectations.
